I agree dress code sucks as a reason for paddling. I had to “assume and take four” when I had a dress code referral for this top which I had worn before. Not like I had no bra, just 1-inch midriff was all. The board left marks for 3 days.
At school up to five swats at one go are given by the coach or assistant principal. I have also been paddled by teachers in the hall for tardies instead of reporting to the office. This is if a student is late for class or disrupting class, they call out if you want a referral to the office or take swats right there and then. I got taken out, bent down in the hall and took two.
[I was paddled in high school for] disrupting class, skipping detention, skipping class, parking violations, unruly behavior on a school bus, dress code violations… the usual shit all students get licks for.
A tardy is given if you're not in the classroom when the bell rings. You don't have to be seated but you must be in the room. You are registered “absent” if you are five minutes late or more, which is considered cutting class.
No-one ever questioned the discipline policy. That was the way it had been for years. The school was very good in every other way and all students knew the penalty for breaking rules or not performing well enough. Like a girl who played the lead role in a school play. She was nearly 19, straight-A student, and she took licks for being late for the play because her boyfriend’s car broke down. She was taken to the office and paddled by Mr. Clark at 9 PM right after the play, which her parents were at! She was very upset over that…
… skipping detention...
I was paddled for “fighting.” When I was 16 a boy called me a [bad name] and I pushed him, and I got 7 swats from Mr. Kinner.
